Independent Print
14th – 31st August, 2013
A group showcase of independently operated Presses and Print Workshops around Melbourne.
Opening Thursday 15th August, 6.00 – 8.00pm @ Firestation Print Studio.
Melbourne is a creative town filled with creative practitioners. But, there aren’t a huge amount of opportunities for such practitioners to make a living doing what they love. The oft quoted statistic is that 5% of graduates of visual art tertiary studies actually continue to become practicing artists – the stat must be even lower for those whose art making practice is their primary source of income.
Enter stage left the grass-roots entrepreneurship and creative endeavor celebrated in the forthcoming exhibition at the Firestation Print Studio, titled Independent Print.
This exhibition showcases four independent and privately operated Presses and Print Workshops run by artist-printmakers who actively collaborate with other artists in their studios to print their work, often while maintaining their own creative practice.
Featuring Lancaster Press (Brooklyn), Rambunctious Press (Richmond), Sinclair Press (Northcote) and Trinacria Press (Northcote) these workshops follow the age-old tradition of the artisan-printmaker who works with artists to assist them realize their creative vision in print media. In doing so they continue one of the earliest modes of creative collaboration.
This diverse exhibition features original etchings, lithographs and collographs created at these four print workshops by artists including Dean Bowen, Robert Hague, Deanna Hitti, David Frazer, Nicole Macdonald, Eliza Turnbull, Graham Badari, Gabriel Maralngurra, Phil Kreveld and Eolo Paul Bottaro to name a few. The works on display are as much a testament to the enormous talents of the artists, as they are to the adaptability and skills of the printers who work with them.
